SAVAGES & BO NINGEN: Words To The Blind

Stolen Recordings and Pop Noire release a collaboration between Bo Ningen and SAVAGES. The release is a recording of a piece originally performed in London last year which sees the bands take to the stage together and play simultaneously. ‘Words To The Blind’ comprises of one 37-minutes long track. Taking their cross fertilisation a step further, following occasional live appearances together and SAVAGES‘ Jehnny Beth guesting on Bo Ningen’s current album ‘III’, ‘Words To The Blind’ is an astonishing piece of work, a ‘simultaneous sonic poem’ inspired by the Dadaist concept of the ‘Simultaneous Poem’.

Gemma Thompson of SAVAGES explains the ideas behind the recording further:

“Zurich in 1916 and Hugo Ball is instrumental in creating the Cabaret Voltaire – a club which will become central to the performances of the Dada movement, during which the artists would experiment with forms of sound poetry and simultaneous poetry. A movement created through the horror of World War One, it attempts to understand how society has reached such an illogical decision. Through simultaneous poetry begins the attempt to delve into chaos and maelstrom, to find the voice of the individual struggling to be heard.

London in 2012 and SAVAGES are recording the debut album ‘Silence Yourself’, in a secluded studio in the North West of the city. In the middle of an intense three weeks, we set out one evening to see the band Bo Ningen play at Cafe Oto. A few days later producer Johnny Hostile begins to muse over the possibility of two bands playing in the same space at the same time. Concurrently I am reading about the performances at the Cabaret Voltaire. We decide to approach Bo Ningen with the idea of collaborating on a ‘Sonic Simultaneous Poem’.

As the idea begins to take shape in early 2013, we prepare for both bands to rehearse together in a studio with a loose composition based around five chapters. As the musicians of both bands consider how to apply themselves with their instruments to each chapter – revolving, colliding and intertwining with words sang in Japanese, French and English by Taigen and Jehn – we also envisage the physical space in which to perform.

We imagine a stage in a large u-shape to contain as much of the audience as possible in the centre. The two drummers next to each other at the ‘bottom’ of the u, then leading around symmetrically (facing each other): guitarists, bassists and singers at the tips of the u-shape. Bo Ningen have a guitar extra, so we hang one from the ceiling to hit as you would a gong. Eventually we fix a date and a space for what we believe is a one-off performance that we name WORDS TO THE BLIND.”

Performed originally at The Red Gallery, London on May 29th 2013.

Available to pre-order now from the Pop Noire Shop. Released on 17th November 2014.

SAVAGES: ‘Fuckers’/’Dream Baby Dream’

One year to the day after their acclaimed debut album, Silence Yourself, SAVAGES return with new music in the shape of 12-inch single ‘Fuckers’ / ‘Dream Baby Dream’.

Recorded at the band’s London’s Forum show on Nov 6 2013 – exactly halfway through the band’s year – the record captures the full sonic intensity of SAVAGES live performance on the progressively wigged-out, 10-minute-plus ‘Fuckers’, as well as their more mesmeric side on a sinuous cover of Suicide’s timeless ‘Dream Baby Dream’.

‘Fuckers’/’Dream Baby Dream’ is available to pre-order now from our Pop Noire Shop and will be released on 5th May/6th May (UK & Europe/North America).

The release will coincide with two SAVAGES-curated Pop Noire nights in east London, the first at Shacklewell Arms on ‘Fuckers’ release day (May 5th) and the second at Birthdays on the anniversary of the ‘Silence Yourself’ album (May 6th).

JOHN & JEHN: Les Césars Trailer

The trailer was directed by Antoine Carlier and the soundtrack sees Johnny Hostile & Jehnny Beth take a new musical direction.

A true Pop Noire Family collective effort. Enjoy.

SAVAGES: ‘Strife’ Video

Today SAVAGES have released a video for ‘Strife’ – a track that features on their debut album ‘Silence Yourself’, available now on the Pop Noire Shop.

“We wanted to make a video that focused on a timeless human physicality and physical expression, a search for understanding through the movement, action and reaction of two characters. We chose the classical landscape of the empty beach. A fight ensues between two men: one older, one younger; a tragic outcome, and death.”

“French director Antoine Carlier – co-founder of Pop Noire records with Jehnny Beth, who previously collaborated with the band on their artwork – filmed the scene with a modern black & white aesthetic on the beaches of Gironde in South-West France. The film is a play on human instincts and desire for survival, echoing the famous beach murder scene in the novel ‘The Stranger’ by Albert Camus.”

“Either a tale from the past or science-fiction, this is an endless story of human struggle. We see the fragmentation between two generations, a subject of predilection for SAVAGES (ref: ‘I Am Here’ manifesto), where the “young, intelligent and radical people” live in servitude to established elders.”

Directed by Antoine Carlier
Produced by Walter Films and SAVAGES
Actors : Leo Pochat and Richard Duval.

LESCOP: ‘Le Vent’ Video

Today LESCOP has released a new music video for ‘Le Vent’. The video was shot on a recent trip to Iceland for Airwaves Festival and was made by Isabelle Pires and our very own Jehnny Beth.

Pop Noire Radio

Our heroine Jehnny Beth has made a few radio shows for us all to listen to. Both are available to stream from here blog:

We’re so happy that SAVAGES got nominated for the Mercury Music Prize yesterday! The girls put so much hard work and thought into recording this album independently with Johnny Hostile at the end of last year.

It’s such a great credit to Matador, Pop Noire and, most importantly, SAVAGES themselves to see it get the critical recognition it truly deserves.

Strange choice, eh? However, the girls have got something special up their sleeves for this event and all secrets will be revealed on the night. We’d love to see you there on the 9th May.

Support will come from our label’s beloved co-owner and SAVAGES‘ super producer, Johnny Hostile, who will be playing some weird, dark, experimental solo stuff – best described in his own words: “It’s a bit like Alan Vega, but better looking”.

SAVAGES: Words To The Blind

SAVAGES and BO NINGEN are teaming up to write and perform a SONIC SIMULTANEOUS POEM entitled ‘WORDS TO THE BLIND’ at THE RED GALLERY, LONDON – on May 29th.

This is an EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE of a unique EXPERIMENTATION inspired by the early DADA concept of SIMULTANEOUS POETRY – a situation where poems are recited simultaneously onstage in different languages “in such a way that the resulting combinations account for the total effect of the work, ELEGIAC, FUNNY or BIZARRE” quoting the leading Dada artist Hugo Ball.

THE SONIC SIMULTANEOUS POEM alludes to the purpose of bringing a solitary voice back to itself. The voice and sounds become immersed and must fight to be heard, and fight to find their path. The ineluctable rhythm and noise of the world threaten to destroy the individual, but it shows resistance. The figure stands amongst the cacophony.

Tickets are £10 can can be bought HERE.
Doors at 8pm – Performance at 9pm .

No entry after performance starts.
The event is likely to be filmed – we will kindly ask the audience to not film or take pictures of this event with their phones or cameras.
Tickets wont be available on the door so please buy in advance.
Ear plugs will be supplied.

LESCOP: La Nuit Americaine Video

Today we have launched a brand new short film into the world. The film features LESCOP‘s ‘La Nuit Americaine’ and was directed by Sylvie Verheyde.

In just under 10 minutes in length, we see Mathieu LESCOP encounter in a distant and heart-aching love affair with a beautiful dancing girl. It’s wonderful to see such brilliant acting from an incredibly talented young man.

See for yourself…

HTB: Video

On a recent SAVAGES trip to New York, director Nathan Corbin met up with the girls and shot them whilst they ventured across the city and performed live events.

The footage has been used to accommodate today’s release of ‘Brid’ by HTB; a SAVAGES side-project featuring vocalist Jehnny Beth, guitarist Gemma Thompson and their producer Johnny Hostile.

HTB: Debut Release

We are delighted to announce that today is the day that our latest project, HTB, release their first record. For those of you that don’t know already…

HTB is an improvisation trio by Johnny Hostile, Gemma Thompson and Jehnny Beth. Each piece of music is recorded with the members performing simultaneously in three separate rooms – Hostile and Thompson creating the natural soundtrack to Beth’s spoken words. In this context, the musicians only rely on what they hear and react to one another spontaneously.  Each track was left exactly as it was performed. Gemma Thompson and Jehnny Beth are also members of the London quartet ‘SAVAGES‘. Johnny Hostile is a musician and producer who previously worked on  LESCOP, SAVAGES and John & Jehn albums. Jehnny Beth and Johnny Hostile are co-founders of Pop Noire records.

The music is available digitally through iTunes and is also physically available to pre-order on vinyl through the Pop Noire Shop.

HTB will also be playing their first live performance next month at Corsica Studios on 27th March. See poster below for more details. Tickets can be purchased HERE.

The event will take place at Birthdays, Dalston on 17th January 2013.

SAVAGES: Bo Ningen – ‘Nichijyou’

Japanese psych-rockers Bo Ningen will be releasing their forthcoming single ‘Nichijyou’ on 7th January 2013 through Stolen Recordings. Here’s the REALLY interesting part…

The track welcomes a collaborative duet between Bo Ningen’s frontman Taigan and our very own Jehnny Beth of SAVAGES. ‘Nichijyou’ features Taigan singing in English for the first time and his and Jehnny’s vocal interactions bounce off each other to a complementary and enthralling effect. The single was also recorded a few weeks ago by our in-house super-producer, Johnny Hostile.

The Pop Noire family have been admirers of Bo Ningen for many years now and it is an absolute pleasure to creatively work with them. We can’t wait to unveil it to the digital word in January. Keep you eyes (and ears) peeled!

SAVAGES: Final Gig of the Year

2012 has been an ever-increasingly amazing year for SAVAGES and the final live show of the year is bound to be a good’un.

Geoff Barrow’s Beak> have invited our girls to support them in their native city of Bristol on 19th December at The Exchange. We would love to see you there!

SAVAGES: Later… with Jools Holland

We freaked out last night. Our girls absolutely stole the show on BBC2’s ‘Later… with Jools Holland’, which fast-tracked its way into being one of the many highlights in an ever-increasingly outstanding year for SAVAGES.

We couldn’t be prouder.

Actually, we COULD be prouder, as Jehnny even represented our label by wearing our brand new Pop Noire t-shirt for their performance of ‘Husbands’!

The whole programme is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and we have a clip of the most important bit below. A full-length programme including more footage will be aired on BBC2 on Friday at 11:50pm.

Enjoy x

SAVAGES: Festival No.6

This Sunday sees SAVAGES play their last of this summer’s festivals as they head way out west for Festival No.6.

SAVAGES will be performing on the Estuary Stage on Sunday night, just before headliners TOY.

Thanks to all who came and made it a very special night for everyone.

For those who could not make it, watch SAVAGES perform their song ‘City’s Full’. Also check out this nice review by Miss Bettenoir.

Very exciting news to share today. SAVAGES have been invited to support British Seapower at their gig at the Krankenhaus 2  Event at ‘The Haunt’ in Brighton, UK. Luke Turner from the Quietus states “despite the fact that they’d only received the call that morning, it was an inspired, assertive performance.” – We are very proud of SAVAGES‘s live debut, which was indeed smashing and very promising. Expect to hear a lot more from SAVAGES soon.
